2017 Ford Escape Strikes a Chord with Autotrader Critics

Within the wide world of automotive, there's nary a class more crowded or competitive than that of the compact crossover. As a result, it can sometimes be a real challenge for such SUVs to establish a name for themselves.

The 2017 Ford Escape, however, endures no such difficulties. In recent years, it's proven itself to be a staple of the segment.

And how, exactly, has it done so?

Autotrader personality Debra Shigley provides the necessary context in the clip below. Have a look and listen right here:

Though every Escape engine option has its perks, one could argue that the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder of the mid-level SE trim is the most well-rounded of the bunch.

Coupling with a six-speed automatic transmission, this four-banger twists out a terrific 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, though an all-wheel system can be had as an option.

And it's certainly no slouch on the fuel-economy front, either, as a front-drive Escape SE, for instance, is expected to achieve 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway).
